Hartmannfabrik

The Hartmannfabrik is the last surviving production building in Chemnitz belonging to Richard Hartmann, the former ‘King of Locomotives’. In its day, the Sächsische Maschinenfabrik was one of the most important engineering companies in Saxony. In addition to its widely renowned locomotives, the company also manufactured steam engines, military equipment, mill machinery, spinning machines and turbines. A beautifully restored Hartmann locomotive can be admired at the Industrial Museum.

After years of lying dormant, the factory hall was refurbished as part of the preparations for the 2025 Capital of Culture year. As part of the refurbishment work, the historic crane runway was also returned to its original position in the hall. In Hartmann’s day, it was used to transport machine and locomotive parts around the hall.  

Spanning 2,000 square metres, the Hartmannfabrik has now become a central hub for socialising, chatting and finding out what’s on. If you want to know what’s happening in the 2025 Capital of Culture, a visit to the Hartmannfabrik is a must. Even beyond the Capital of Culture year, the Hartmannfabrik will remain a key meeting place for Chemnitz residents and visitors alike.
