Majolikahäuser

The majolica houses at 48–52 Barbarossastraße, built in 1897–98, are definitely worth a visit. They are among the most magnificent and striking buildings in Kaßberg. They were commissioned in 1897–98 by the architect and developer Reinhold Siebert.

‘Majolica’ comes from the Spanish (‘obra de malica’ = Malaga ware) and refers to pottery with a tin glaze. And the two houses at the highest point of Barbarossastraße certainly have plenty of this to offer. During Chemnitz’s year as European Capital of Culture, they were undoubtedly one of the city’s most popular photo opportunities.
