Opernhaus Theater Chemnitz

Opernhaus Theater Chemnitz

Built between 1906 and 1909 to designs by City Planning Officer Richard Möbius in the Neo-Baroque style, the opera house dominates Theatre Square with its domed structure and the stage house rising above it. Following its reconstruction in 1992, the building’s historically inspired exterior gave way to an ‘opera house in keeping with the spirit of the times’, equipped with state-of-the-art sound and stage technology. It was here that Chemnitz’s reputation as the ‘Saxon Bayreuth’ – a reputation dating back to the 1920s and now restored – was established.
